Every June, families across the United States celebrate Father’s Day by honoring the fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers, and father figures who have shaped their lives. While the holiday is now marked with cards, family gatherings, and thoughtful gifts, its history dates back more than a century and was inspired by one daughter’s desire to honor her father’s love and sacrifice.

The Beginning of Father’s Day

The idea for Father’s Day is largely credited to Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington. In 1909, after attending a Mother’s Day church service, Dodd felt that fathers deserved a special day of recognition as well.

Dodd’s father, William Jackson Smart, was a Civil War veteran and single parent who raised six children after his wife passed away during childbirth. Inspired by his dedication and selflessness, Dodd began campaigning for a day to honor fathers everywhere.

She originally suggested June 5, her father’s birthday, but organizers needed more time to plan the celebration. Instead, the first Father’s Day was held on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington.

Growing National Recognition

Although the idea of Father’s Day gained popularity, it took many years to become an official national holiday. Some people initially viewed the celebration as overly commercial or unnecessary compared to Mother’s Day.

Despite the hesitation, support for the holiday continued to grow:

• 1916: President Woodrow Wilson supported the idea and spoke at a Father’s Day celebration.
• 1924: President Calvin Coolidge encouraged states to observe Father’s Day.
• 1966: President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day.
• 1972: President Richard Nixon officially signed Father’s Day into law, making it a permanent national holiday in the United States.
