What to Expect Before, During, & After IPL Treatment

Prior to your IPL treatment, our team will perform a comprehensive consultation with you to ensure we understand your needs, goals, and medical history. Using our expertise, we’ll then create an IPL treatment plan for you that gets you your ideal results!

Before

Prior to your treatment, we ask that you avoid sensitizing agents like chemical exfoliants and vitamin A derivatives, as well as minimize sun exposure. We’ll give you thorough prep instructions during your consultation!

During

During your treatment, we’ll start by cleansing your skin, covering your eyes with protective shields or goggles, and applying ultrasound gel to prevent discomfort. Then, we’ll select your settings based on your skin type and proceed with your treatment. The procedure may take 5 to 45 minutes, depending on the areas being treated.

After

Although treatments have no downtime, reactions could vary patient to patient. After an IPL treatment, your skin may feel warm or tender. To further reduce redness and protect your skin, we’ll end your treatment with our top-selling Intensive Recovery Cream and mineral SPF. For optimal recovery, we recommend that you use SPF daily and avoid retinoids and harsh exfoliants one week post-treatment. After each visit, you can expect to see a gradual decrease in the hair thickness and in the amount of hair present. In addition, you may also see a decrease in stubble, rashes and ingrown hairs!

What does IPL feel like?

IPL treatment doesn’t require numbing. Most patients would describe the sensation as being similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin or a mild warming sensation.

How many IPL treatment will I need?

A series of 5-6 treatments is recommended, in addition to one yearly maintenance treatment, in order to get long-lasting results.

Why do I need multiple treatments?

Our hair grows in 3 different stages, and is not in the same stage at the same time. So when an area is treated, only a percentage of hair follicles is affected. Therefore, to effectively reduce your unwanted hair, multiple treatments are necessary.

How long should I stop using retinol before my treatment?

We perform IPL on healthy and non-irritated skin. If retinol has caused your skin to be dry, red, flaky, or otherwise irritated, you should stop using retinol 1-2 weeks prior to your IPL treatment.

I’ve had gold therapy in the past. Is IPL right for me?

Gold therapy is typically given either orally or by injection to treat arthritis. The IPL energy causes a chemical reaction which results in a permanent bluish/gray skin discoloration called chrysiasis. Therefore, any patient with a past or present history of gold therapy is contraindicated and treatment is not recommended.
